Client Overview

  • Company Name: Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 25 Exhibit Hall
  • Location: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
  • Challenge: The Legion has opened a new space that includes an exhibit hall that pays respect to the sacrifice and memory of all those that have served. There was a need to create displays to showcase commemoration pieces for visitors, but also be able to change the configuration for events and campaigns as needed. One of the mission mandates of the Royal Canadian Legion is to engage with the student population in town.

Objective

Client's Goals:

These spaces are important to the Royal Canadian Legion as they serve as a reminder to “Never Forget”.

    • There was a need for a space that was highly customizable to hold different sized commemoration pieces for display.
    • The client also needed the ability to change the configuration around for different purposes and events.
    • Ease of install, cost-effectiveness and ability to customize and CHANGE TOMORROW was very important to the client.
    • They needed to create a space that students could get involved with.
    • Have a creative set-up that was unlike the traditional look of a museum.

The Challenge & Solution

Problem

The mission mandate of the Royal Canadian Legion is to honour the veterans’ service and sacrifice. This is also about community support and reaching out to the youth in the community, because the Legion wants them to understand from a young age that freedom is not really actually free. How do we build an engaging, interactive space that can be modified for different uses?

One way of doing that is creating a space that allows visitors and students the opportunity to view commemoration pieces and learn about them. The problem was there was no prior solution that allowed custom displays that accommodate different sized items while being cost-effective. The need to adapt the displays as needed was also not something that could be resolved with traditional shelving. This Branch needed a modular solution to support their campaigns and events, such as the Poppy Campaign in November.

The Branch was struggling with coming up with a creative way to display the museum pieces, uniforms and pictures and photographs and artifacts is a unique way because people have mentioned that they don’t like the layout in a traditional museum. Modernizing and modifying the look of a traditional museum is important to attract students and youth, so they can learn about the sacrifices made.

  • Customization/Adaptation: EZBlocks wooden blocks were used to build custom shelves and seating for the Legion Branch No. 25’s Exhibit Hall. The height was customized to accommodate the different sized commemoration pieces. Accessories such as glass shelves were added to create additional spaces.
  • Features Used: Modular design, user-friendly interface, scalability, ability to change as needed
  • Implementation Timeline: Once the design renderings by the EZBlocks team was submitted and approved, the blocks were delivered to the location. It only took one day to build the displays for the entire area.

Results & Benefits

Impact on Operations:

This Branch is preparing for students coming in here learning about the artifacts on display. The partnership between the Sault Ste. Marie Museum and the Forty-ninth Field Regiment Museum (where the artifacts have been displayed) is now well represented. Student groups can now come in, and the EZBlocks can be used to set up tables and workstations.

This new EZBlocks space also allows them to plan more events as the wooden blocks can be easily reconfigured. Traditional cabinets and shelving units do not provide this feature.

Key Metrics:

Branch No. 25 was able to save on significant costs for shelving units and cabinets as well as labour. Utilizing EZBlocks’ FREE design and consultation services meant saving on costs, and creating a space that actually works.

EZBlocks are a one-time investment, which can produce various configurations and support different types of events.

Client Testimonial:

“I would certainly highly recommend the use of EZBlocks in any other Legion, applications and construction project. EZBlocks is cost-effective and versatile and it can be adapted to many, many different space sizes. They can include other groups, including students in the construction. You don’t have to be an engineer or a carpenter to put it together and like Lego blocks, your creativity and your imagination are your only limits.”

Pierre Breckinridge, President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25, Sault Ste. Marie.

Future Plans

Other events are planned for this room and the ability to move things around and then reconfigure them quickly is a nice feature.

Every few months, the team will bring in students from White Pines Collegiate and give them an opportunity to think up a new concept and reconstruct the EZblocks.
